Ground nobody likes mowing

Embankments, verges, noise barrier slopes, landfill caps, solar parks — long stretches, sloping ground and a result that looks exactly the same again four weeks later.

The situation

It is the combination that makes it unpleasant

Vegetation management along transport routes and at facilities is not difficult work. It is unpleasant because three things come together: slopes, where crewed machines reach their tipping limit; traffic running right alongside; and repetition — the same area, several times a year, with nothing about the job ever changing.

On top of that, these are the tasks that come under staffing pressure first at municipalities and operators. They are visible when they are skipped, but rarely urgent enough to be given priority.

For pure embankment mowing there is an established market. Remote-controlled tracked slope mowers have been in municipal and forestry use for years; according to their manufacturers they work on slopes of up to 55 or 60 degrees depending on the model, and are designed for exactly that — low centre of gravity, wide track, mowing deck as an integral part.

The PALLAS range is specified with a gradeability of 30 to 50 per cent, i.e. up to about 27 degrees. Anyone who only wants to mow steep embankments is better served by a specialist machine. We would rather say that here than in the first conversation.

It becomes interesting where mowing is not the only task. A specialist machine stands idle out of season. A platform that mows in summer, moves material in winter and does a round at night is costed differently — and its superstructure changes over the same payload interface as any other.

Roadside and trackside vegetation

Verges, embankments and noise barrier slopes along roads and railways. This is where everything that makes the work dangerous comes together — slope and moving traffic on the same site.

Solar parks and ground-mounted installations

Mowing between and beneath the module rows — low clearance, narrow aisles, large area, clear geometry. A mappable environment in which autonomy genuinely pays.

Landfills, dams and retention areas

Large vegetated bodies that need regular maintenance and have to be inspected anyway. On landfills, gas measurement comes on top — the same round, a second benefit.

Limits

What to clarify beforehand

  • The gradient decides. Up to about 27 degrees according to the specification of the larger sizes. Beyond that, a specialist machine is the right tool — and we say so.
  • The grass hides what you cannot see. Stones, metal parts, tree stumps, wildlife. That applies to every mower, but an unmanned one needs a defined mode of operation for it instead of a driver who reacts.
  • Season and utilisation. The mowing season is limited. Anyone buying the platform for that alone is buying idle time as well — the numbers work through multiple uses, not through mowing alone.
  • Nature conservation rules come first. Cutting height, time windows and mowing regime follow the requirements, not the machine. The technology has to adapt to them, not the other way round.

  • Payload: mowing deck as a custom payload; on landfills additionally the gas detector cluster, in solar parks LiDAR for path guidance
  • Extensions: generator for long working days without charging infrastructure, winch for self-recovery on slopes
  • System components: transport and loading — in vegetation management the work site changes constantly, and that is often what decides the economics
